You will search for a domain name, for example: John Smith, then you will decide it you want to have a .com, .us, etc. Once you have decided on your domain name, your hosting company will register it for you, as long as no one else has already registered that domain name.
If it turns out that your requested domain name has been registered already, you will be sent a message saying that, that name was not available and that you should choose another name. Your registered domain name is yours to keep though, if you were to leave your web hosting company, you do not have to re-register your name.
Choosing the right name for the type of traffic you want to generate on your website is just as important as registering it. Using your name as a domain name may seem like a good idea, but it may not generate the type of buzz and traffic that you are looking to generate.
If you use key words in your domain name, however you may be able to find that you are generating more hits on your web site. There is a reason for this, people will look up information or products that they want to know about by specific items or key words.

Keeping your domain name short and easily remembered is a good idea, you are given a lot of room to create the right domain name for registering, but you do not have to use all of the space. If you do have a longer domain name, using hyphens is a good idea, to break up the name some what.
If you want to use teach dog training to your dog, you might want to use: teach-dog-training-to-your-dog.com instead of: teachdogtrainingtoyourdog.com, the one with he hyphens is much easier to read and understand than the second one.
Registering your domain name may seem like something that you do not need to do, but doing so will protect you as well as your web site, it may even help generate some traffic to it that you did not expect.
